Birthday party

2010
05.17

As I mentioned before, Twink turned 2 over a week ago. His actual birthday was a quiet family sort of day, and we had a big bouncy party a couple of days ago. A few more photos from his birthday (including the inflatable car bought by our lovely neighbour):

Am I really 2?!

I was getting a bit worried about his birthday – half the people I invited couldn’t come (or changed their minds at the last minute!) so I was worried there would be too many adults & not enough children for Twink to play with. Anyway, we ordered a bouncy castle (just because we could)

and we bought a lot of food to burn on the BBQ, and ordered a cake. Twink spent the night at his Auntie’s & arrived back at 11.30 to find balloons, & banners, & presents, & a bouncy castle! He was VERY excited! This is the first time he’s really understood the whole concept of presents. At christmas we had to encourage him to open anything, and he wanted to put things back in the paper after he had opened them! This time he needed no encouragement at all!

Wrapping paper be gone!

After we finally convinced him to get dressed, loads of people arrived, bringing with them lots of children and Twink had a great time. Then there was cake (the cake was my cake too as I have a big birthday coming up next week)

I'll just take this bit of icing...

Yep, it’s a tardis cake (not the best photo…)! How cool is that?! More on my son’s Doctor Who obsession in another post…anyway, he loved it, & the icing turned everyone’s teeth blue! The amount of sugar in it also helpfully turned a slightly ratty, nap missing boy into an energetic, happy birthday boy!

I had thought the dalek bubble bath would be the favourite present (& it was certainly appreciated…it spent most of the party guarding the back door!), but it was trumped by a…SONIC SCREWDRIVER!!! I don’t think Twink has let go of it since he unwrapped it…I can’t see the batteries lasting long…

The weather was absolutely fantastic. Despite rain being forecast, we had an amazingly hot, sunny day. Twink took a moment out to chill with an ice lolly and his new screwdriver.

Shortly after everyone left, Twink asked for a milk feed and promptly fell asleep. He had missed his nap, so going to sleep for the night at 5.30pm isn’t so unusual…but not waking up until 10.40am the next day is COMPLETELY unheard of! 17 hours and 10 minutes sleep…I guess all the fun wore him out!

And Now We Are Two

Twink turned 2 on Saturday. I am no longer the mother of 2 under 2! Strangely it doesn’t feel as momentous as I thought it would. Turning one was a huge event – my first child’s first birthday – and I was full of memories of giving birth to him the year before and how different life is with him. Now we’ve known him for two years I can’t quite remember life before him, so there’s less comparisons to be made between now and then.

He had a quiet birthday as his party will be next Saturday. I bought him a ginormous balloon (seriously, it’s bigger than he is!), we gave him some cards from friends and family that had been delivered during the week (including one from me & Hubby and one from Squishy) and made rice crispie cakes.

I'll just eat some of these rice crispies

Nom Nom Nom

You try some, Mummy!

We had a long, lazy lunch at our favourite pub (Twink ignored his lunch, ate my chips and flirted with the waitresses), then a friend came round with some presents for Twink (although I have a hunch he mainly bought duplo so that he could play with it himself!). Hubby & I have only just ordered his big birthday present…does that make me a bad mummy? Twink had a lovely relaxed day, but still has no real understanding that it was his birthday. However, he has definitely got the hang of opening cards and presents!! We will be wrapping up a few little things to give to him on Saturday, including this:

Exterminate! Exterminate!

It’s bubble bath! Not sure if I’ve mentioned my son’s obsession with Doctor Who, but he LOVES it. His favourite book is a Doctor Who annual which he frequently goes to bed cuddling (yes, really…he usually goes to bed with a few books, but has yet to take any interest in a teddy bear). He is going to go nuts when he sees this…& as for his birthday cake…watch this space!

I managed to make my gift for the party on Friday…

…not bad for my first attempt at freezer paper stencilling! I would have preferred to do another coat of paint, but ran out of time.

Project of this week has been a crocheted matinee jacket for Squishy. At this point it was going well:

Now it is not. I have made the skirt part (which is the bit in the picture) & am half way through the jacket body (next will come sleeves, then collar), however it is already obvious that all is not well. When you attach the jacket body to the skirt part, you are supposed to gather the skirt to make it fit…in my case it would require the jacket body to be gathered as somehow the skirt is the smaller of the two. I have no idea how that is even possible as I have definitely made the right number of stitches on both pieces (counted several times) and although the pieces use different stitches I can’t imagine that my tension changed quite so much…somehow I will have to bodge it to fit, as I really don’t want to start again…and I do feel the skirt could benefit with lots of edging on one end ;-)

Gratuitous picture of my daughter with her pretty blouse on for her brother’s birthday lunch!

Present Thoughts

We haven’t been having a particularly fun week. Twink has been working on getting his whining to the perfect pitch to make Mummy’s head explode, and Squishy is having her 12 week growth spurt. Fun and games! This has led to me having a bit of birthday blindness. We have 2 birthday parties this weekend, 3 birthdays and only 1 present.

Twink's first birthday

The first party is on Friday and is for a 2 year old boy who I have seen maybe 3 times in the last year. What is the protocol here? I’d feel rude turning up to a party with nothing, but equally wouldn’t expect everyone to bring someone just because I’d invited them to a party. I’m thinking I’ll use some blank t-shirts I have and try some freezer paper stencilling. I’ve never done it before, but how hard can it be?!

Twink's Birthday Card

Saturday is looking like it’ll be a difficult day. We have a 2 year old’s (we’ll call him J) party to go to at 2pm, but it is also Twink’s second birthday and we’d like to do something as a family. But we don’t know what! So whatever we do, it’ll be a busy sort of day. Twink’s party is the following week as he’ll be sharing the party with me because my (sh….30th) birthday is the week after and May is already so full of parties we didn’t feel we needed one each.

Twink & his cake

J is the lucky one – I already have a present for him as Twink was given an outfit by the MIL at Christmas which I’d never put him in, so I’m recycling it for J who it’ll suit perfectly! Just for completeness, if you remember my best mate (of baby-catching fame), her sister is J’s mum. So J is part of our extended adopted family.

Mmmm...cake!

As for my own son…still no present! I’m planning to get him a balance bike, but somehow we haven’t ordered it yet, so I think I’ll pick up some arty stuff just so that he’s got something to unwrap on the day. Wrapping paper, a box of some kind, some bubbles and a balloon will be enough to make him happy. Would it be wrong to get him to make his own birthday card?! He loves an excuse to get the paints out!

Sigh…I just don’t seem to be able to get in the birthday mood, which is highly irritating as May is full of birthdays and celebrations. Somehow a second birthday doesn’t seem as exciting as a first birthday, but he’s still not as aware of what a birthday is as he will be next year. It’s stuck in between, and as I’m still in the new baby, sleep deprived haze, I can’t get into it.

Oh well…on to the next present I need to find…

It’s my wedding anniversary next Wednesday! We’ll have been married 3 whole years, which apparently means we have to buy some leather…seems a bit kinky to me, but who am I to argue with wikipedia? I have no idea what to get though – we have leather sofas, DH has a leather strap on his watch and already has nice leather shoes…maybe it’d be enough if we go to a restaurant and eat steak…it’s the same animal after all!

Twink's birthday presents!

After all that brainstorming, all I’ve decided is that I need to freezer stencil a t-shirt tomorrow…but what design to use?!

Hope you liked the photos from Twink’s first birthday. Seems so long ago…and how young does Twink look?!!

Turning a top into a romper suit

2010
04.18

Look at this:

After I put this top on this morning, I decided I didn’t like it. It’s just not long enough & people really don’t need to see my tummy. So I thought it would make a perfect romper suit for Squishy…I just love babies in stripes!! So began the bodge fest. Step one was to get some idea of a pattern. Obviously this involved dressing Squishy into the top and taking some ludicrously cute (& blurry – I’m not a photographer and she is very wriggly) photos that really didn’t get me any closer to a romper suit design.

Step 2 was more sensible – find romper suit that fits her & sort of cut round it. I say sort of, because I wanted to keep the pockets and all the neatly finished edges (because that way I don’t have to hem anything!). So it may turn out to be a little roomy in places, it is definitely not symmetrical and the sleeves are definitely going to balloon out at the back…but hey…I bet she’ll love having all that space for her elbows! I also didn’t have any matching thread, but babies like contrast…right?!

Basically I cut out a romper suit shape (without legs) from the front and back, detached the sleeves (keeping them the same shape as on the original top as each end was edged already) and saved a strip of edged material to add to the top of the back piece as the back of my top was taller than Squishy and had to be trimmed. I know that doesn’t make much sense, but as I’ve mentioned before, this was a bodge job and I just cut a little bit here and a little bit there until I thought it might do what I wanted it to. Then I just sewed it all together, turning the sleeves upside down so the bow is at the shoulder instead of the wrist. Sewing the sleeves involved lots of mini pleats which explains the odd shape, but sleeves have never been my forte and they usually look alright once they’re on.

So far I’ve done everything except finish the legs. That can wait until my model is awake and can try on her new outfit so I can adjust the waist (if Madam prefers a more fitted design) and figure out where the crotch needs to be. Here is the outfit so far:

This is the first real item of clothing I have made for myself or my family in too long. Thank goodness for the inspiration provided by my adorable daughter! One day I aim to make a larger proportion of my children’s wardrobes (my sewing room is a work in progress), but for now, every single item is a cause for celebration! Hopefully tomorrow I can post a picture of Squishy in her new finished romper suit!

Edited: Here is the finished article:

Squish doesn’t stay still for very long, so I’m sorry about the blurred photograph. The romper suit is definitely a botched job, but it fits well enough, and the fabric is so lovely and soft. If I do it again I think I’ll either decide against randomly adding a gusset at the last minute or will actually make it properly. I.e. I’ll copy the shape of the gusset in the romper suit I copied rather than just cutting out an odd shaped bit of fabric, hemming it & sewing it on. It ended up ridiculously too small (to the point where it may as well not be there!) & is the cause of a rather large hole…but you can’t see that unless you’re actually looking at her crotch…and she’s always got her legs moving so fast you’d probably be struggling even then!

As with everything last minute, I had decided that I HAD to finish it that evening, so adding the poppers on was done in a rush and therefore had to be done several times. For the record, you can remove hammer in poppers with a pair of pliers and a helpful husband! I just kept on putting the stupid things in back to front…there’s some saying I could put here….something about haste and speed…but I won’t, because even though I know it’s true, the next time I get excited about a project for one of my children, I will once again be in a mad rush to Just Get It Finished!

Sleeeeeeeeep

When you become a parent, suddenly sleep gains sooooo much more importance, and even complete strangers will ask you how much you’re getting. Ironic really, when you consider you’re probably getting less than you ever have before (& if you have a 9 week old baby and are still getting lots of sleep, I don’t want to know!). The process actually starts before you even have your baby – sleeping is practically impossible when you’re heavily pregnant. Especially if, like me, you have SPD…it wasn’t fun.

My sleep history has never been good. I’ve been an intermittent insomniac ever since I can remember, trying every natural remedy under the sun (lettuce leaves eaten before bed was the oddest…apparently lettuce contains opiates! Didn’t work though, and as much as I like lettuce, going to sleep with that taste in your mouth is not easy!). I’m sort of used to it now and can function on surprisingly little sleep.

What I’ve learnt though is that being woken up by small people is a different kind of tiredness to being kept awake by insomnia. It drains so much more out of you. The sleepy breastfeeding hormones help, but then Twink decides to wake up at dawn after a night full of feeding Squishy, (and after a late bedtime for me as I’m incapable of going to sleep before 11!) and I’m feeling a little dead. I don’t even get up to Twink (husband does, bless him), but it still disrupts what little sleep I was getting (Squishy likes lie ins so has usually settled in for a nice long sleep just before Twink wakes up). Today I’ve been awake since 5am after going to bed about midnight. Yawn.

So when random strangers ask how she’s sleeping after both getting her name wrong and asking if she’s good (she’s my BABY – she’s blimming fantastic okay?!) I have a tendency to get a little sarcastic.

The answer, in case you’re interested, is that she sleeps fine, like a baby in fact (better than Twink did at this age), but generally I’m lying awake next to her making mental lists, surfing the Internet or…you know…enjoying cosy cuddles with a sleeping newborn.

This is my first post written entirely on the WordPress app on my iPhone, which means I can’t do as much to it as I usually would, & for some reason the photos are stuck at the end. I will edit that when I can get to my laptop, but in the meantime, one photo is a sleeping Twink resting his head on my bump, & the other is Squishy asleep on my shoulder…lovely sleeping babies :D

Squishy’s Arrival & a bit of (unrelated) Stupidity

2010
04.07

I had every intention of just telling the story of Squishy’s arrival, but I feel I need to own up to being monumentally stupid at times…if anyone asks, I’m blaming baby brain, okay?!

Last night I sent a text message to a friend, asking when she wanted to meet up. This morning she replied saying we’d already made plans for tomorrow afternoon. Doh! That’s not it though…that’s just a little added daftness I’m throwing in for free.

Fast forward to 2pm this afternoon and I’m waiting for her to arrive.

2.30pm – I’m getting annoyed.

3pm – I’m really upset now. I decide to send her a text asking where the hell she is. But before I send the message I read the old message…& notice the crucial word; ‘tomorrow’.

3.05pm – I’m trying to sink into the sofa in shame. How I managed to read it & assume she meant today, I don’t know, but I felt ridiculously stupid.

So this evening I decided to bake a cake to cheer myself up.

Fail!

Yep, that’s a crater in the middle of my cake! I am usually quite good at baking, honestly, but apparently not today! The obvious next step was to hack it to bits & cover it in icing.

It’s a teddy bear…an alien teddy bear…a lilac alien teddy bear!

Meh, whatever it is it tasted pretty good & led to the line; ‘you don’t need to cut it, you can just pull the ears off’, which made me laugh! The end result of the cake was that I’m cheered up, so it did its job!

I haven’t left much time to write about Squishy’s arrival into the world, so I’ll keep it short and to the point (like the birth actually!):

  • One hour 50 minutes from start to baby.
  • One hour 20 minutes from my waters breaking.
  • About 25 minutes in established labour.
  • She surprised us all by being breech.
  • She arrived as the midwife walked through the front door – so technically ‘born before arrival’.
  • My bestest friend ever caught her (having arrived less than 5 minutes earlier) on her own daughter’s birthday, & is named on my notes as delivering her.
  • My best friend told us we’d had a boy (but realised her mistake a couple of minutes later!).
  • The birth pool went back unused as we didn’t have time to fill it.
  • The third stage took an annoying hour & a half – much harder work than just having the baby!.

And today is her 2 month birthday!
